Spent 3 Hours on One Reel. Got 12 Views.

I have a confession. The worst-performing reel I ever posted took me three hours to make. I storyboarded it. I reshot the hook three times. I color-graded it. I picked the perfect trending audio. I A/B tested two captions.

It got 12 views. Twelve. My dog has more followers than that.

The best-performing reel I ever posted took 8 minutes. I filmed in my kitchen, used whatever shirt was on the chair, and wrote the caption in 30 seconds. It hit 180K views and got me 800 new followers in a week.

I wish I was exaggerating.

The trap

I called myself a perfectionist. I thought I was being professional. I thought the algorithm rewarded effort. I thought the audience could tell.

I was wrong on all three counts. The algorithm rewards engagement, not polish. The audience doesn't care about production value — they care about value. And the "professionalism" was actually procrastination dressed up as craft.

I was using "but I need to re-edit the audio balance" as a way to avoid posting. Because posting means judgment. Editing means safety.

What the 80/20 actually looks like

80% of your reel's performance comes from 20% of your effort. Specifically:

- The **first 2 seconds** (the hook) - The **first line of your caption** (the stop-scroll) - The **CTA at the end** (the engagement prompt)

Everything else — the transitions, the color grading, the perfect transition between two clips — adds maybe 5% of performance for 80% of the work.

If you're spending an hour on the editing and 5 minutes on the hook, you're optimising the wrong part.

What changed

I started timing myself. 30 minutes max per reel, from idea to posted. Some take 12 minutes. Some take 28. None take 3 hours.

I pre-write 3 hooks for any idea I want to post, pick the strongest, and move on. I don't color grade. I don't A/B test. I don't "let it sit for a day before posting." I post.

The result? I post 3x more content. My average views went up. My engagement rate is higher because the energy in the reel isn't drained from over-editing.

Not "good enough for now." Good enough period. The audience will never see the version you didn't post. They'll never know the audio was slightly off. They'll never know you didn't add a transition. They will only ever see the version you actually published.
